The Spies Report to Joshua

Leaving Rahab, the spies made their way safely out through the gate of the city, and made their way to the mountain where they hid themselves until it was safe to continue with their return journey home. Arriving home, they reported to Joshua and told him that the Lord had been good to them, and in fact had delivered into their hands all the land; for all the inhabitants of the land were in fear of them. So Joshua early the next morning moved the company of the children of Israel from where they were encamped near the Jordan and lodged there preparatory to crossing over. And after three days, the officers went through the hosts and told the people that when they see the covenant of the ark of their God and the priests the Levites bearing it, then they should remove from their lodgings and follow after it; but not to get closer than two thousand cubits of it, and certainly not to pass it, because they did not know the way, and must be led by the ark of the covenant of the Lord.

Stand in the Holy Place

Stand in the Holy Place
More than ever, I am convinced that we are in the last days. The best date available by the most meticulous calculation of the date of Jesus’ death on the cross is April 3, A.D.33, which means that the year 2033 would make approximately 2000 since Jesus left us saying “a little while and I will return.”  Looking back at the Old Testament, I see approximately 6000 years from Adam’s creation to the time Jesus came, and that 6000 years was broken up into 3 distinct periods of 2000 years each.  I do not know when Jesus will return; but I do know that He said certain ominous world signs would precede His coming. (See Matthew 24) When I see the state of the world, when I hear the blasphemy on Radio and Television and elsewhere, I cannot but wonder how much longer the Lord will allow it to go on? To me the world today seems to be much worse than it was immediately before the God of Heaven destroyed the Old World, and still much worse than it was in Sodom and Gomorrah. Ultimately, all I can say to all those who look forward to His coming is, “Stand in the Holy Place.”

The Spies Escaped.

Having made their promise to Rahab, the two spies escaped under cover of darkness, Rahab having let them down by a cord through her window which was close to the town’s wall. Rahab was not only trustworthy, but a good ally to have, since she not only hid them and helped them to escape, but  she also advised them of the best route to take, directing them to avoid capture by escaping through the mountain, where she old them to hide themselves three days until the searchers got tired and give up. The spies thanked her and promised to be faithful to their promises to her, and gave her a scarlet thread to display in the very window through which she had helped them to escape, and advised her to take her father and her siblings to her house and protect them there, and keep them inside the house and caution them not to go outside of the house once the invasion started; assuring her that they will be protected as long as they remained in her house. The men also advised her not to speak about their discussion with anyone, reminding her that if she blabbed, or did not do according as they had advised her and any harm befell her or her family, then their hands would be innocent of their blood

Rahab’s Intuition

Strange as it may seem, unless one includes in the equation God’s mighty foreknowledge and power, the woman Rahab, the harlot, knew who the spies were, knew their mission, and knew also that their mission would be successful; for she told them, “I know that the Lord has given you the land, that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land fear you. For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what he did to the two kings of the Amorites who were on the other side of the Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed.  And as soon as we had heed these things our hearts did melt, neither was there any courage remain in any man because of you; for the Lord is God in heaven above and in the earth beneath. Now, therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the Lord since I have shown you kindness you will also show kindness unto my father’s house and give me a true token, so that my father’s household will be saved from death when you destroy the rest of my people. And the men answered and promised her that her name would be mentioned both in their report, and also before the Lord; and that Rahab and her father’s household would be spared.

Rahab and the Spies.

Now Joshua sent out two spies with instructions to view the land of Jericho and they went to a harlot’s house and lodged there. And the king of Jericho found out that the men were of the tribe of Israel who had come to search out the country.  So accordingly, the King of Jericho sent to Rahab and demanded that she turned over the men that she was harboring in her house, because they were spies. But Rahab took the two men and hid them and told the king’s messengers that the two men had indeed entered her house, but that they had since left and she had no idea where they went. She further explained that the men had left as soon as it was dark at about the time when the gates were being shut; but if they were pursued quickly they surely would be caught as they could not have gotten very far. At that time the two spies were hidden on the roof of her house; but her explanation satisfied the king’s men and so they left her house to pursue after the two spies.

God Counsels – “Be Strong and Courageous.”

“Only be strong and very courageous,” said the Lord, “that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses my servant commanded you. Turn not from it to the right hand or to the left; so that you may prosper wherever you go.  This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate therein day and night that you may observe to do all that is written therein; for then you shall make your way prosperous; and then you shall have good success.  Have I your God not commanded you to be strong and be of good courage? Be not afraid, nor be dismayed for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

And after the death of Moses, the servant of the Lord, it came to pass that the Lord said to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' minister,"Moses my servant is dead; now, therefore, arise go over this Jordan thou and all this people unto the land which I do give to them, the children of Israel. Every place that the sole of your feet shall tread upon that have I given you as I said unto Moses. From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river Euphrates all the land of the Hittites and unto the great sea towards the going down of the sun shall be your coast. There shall not any man be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so will I be with you. I will not fail you or forsake you."

Joshua Succeeds – Moses extolled

After the death and burial of Moses, Joshua the son of Nun, was full of the Spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands hand upon him.  And the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the Lord commanded Moses. And the name and memory of Moses were extolled in these words. “And there arose not a prophet in Israel since like unto Moses whom the Lord knew face to face; in all the signs and the wonders which the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants, and to all his land. And in all that mighty hand and in all the great terror which Moses showed in the sight of all Egypt.”  It is not certain whether in the premises Moses wrote his own eulogy or whether it was written by Joshua the servant of God, Moses successor. In either case it comes at the end of the fifth book of the law the books of Moses.

Moses Took one last look Before he Died.

Now Moses went up from the plains of Moab unto the mountain of Nebo to the top of Pisgah over against Jericho.  And the Lord showed him all the land of Gilead unto Dan, and all Naphtali and the land of Ephraim, and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah unto the utmost sea.  And the Negev and the plain of the valley of Jericho the city of palm trees unto Zoar.  And the Lord said unto Moses, “This is the land which I swore unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob saying, “I will give it unto thy seed.  I have caused you to see it with your eyes, but you shall not go over there.” So having seen it Moses the servant of God died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord. And God buried him in a valley in the land of Moab over against Beth-peor, but no one ever found out the exact spot. And Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died, and his eyes were not dim nor his natural strength abated. And the children of Israel wept for Moses in the pains of Moab, and mourned for him thirty days.

Moses Final Words of Blessing

Having given his blessings to all the tribes Moses concludes: “There is none like unto the God of Jeshurun who rides upon the heaven in thy help, and in His Excellency in the sky. The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are his everlasting arms; and He shall thrust out the enemy from before thee, and shall say destroy them.”  Israel then shall dwell in safety, alone the fountain of Jacob shall be upon a land of grain and wine, also His heavens shall drop down dew.  Happy art thou O Israel! Who is like unto thee O people saved by the Lord the shield of your help. And who is the sword of thy Excellency? Thy enemies shall be found liars unto thee and thou shall tread upon their high places.

And of Zebulun he said, “Rejoice Zebulun, in thy going out and Issachar in thy tents. They shall call the people into thy mountain; there they shall offer sacrifice of righteousness; for they shall suck the abundance of the seas, and treasures hidden in the sand. And of Gad he said, blessed be he who enlarged Gad; he dwells like a lion and tears the arm by the crown of the head. And he provided the first part for himself because there, in the portion of the lawgiver was he seated; and he came with the heads of the people, he executed the righteousness of the Lord and his ordinances with Israel. And of Dan he said Dan is a lion’s whelp and he shall leap from Bashan. And of Naphtali he said, O Naphtali satisfied with favor, and full with the blessing of the Lord, possess thou the West and the South. And of Asher, he said, Let Asher be blessed with children, let him be acceptable to his children and let him dip his foot in oil.  Your shoes shall be of iron and bronze and as thy days, so shall your strength be.

Continuing Moses Said, still referring to Levi, “Bless Lord his substance, and accept the work of his hands; smite through the loins of them who rise against him, and of they who hate him that they rise not again. And for Benjamin he said, the beloved of the Lord shall dwell in safety by him, and the Lord shall cover him all the day long, and he shall dwell between his shoulders.  And of Joseph he said, blessed of the Lord be his land for the precious things of heaven; for the dew; and for the deep that stretches out beneath. And for the precious fruits brought forth by the sun and for the precious things put forth by the moon; and for the chief things of the ancient mountains; and for the precious things of the lasting hills; and for the precious things of the earth, and the fullness thereof; and for the bush, let the blessing come upon the head of Joseph and on top of the head of him who was separated from his brethren, his glory is like the firstling of his bullock and his horns are like the horns of a wild ox; with them he shall push the people together to the ends of the earth; and they are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and they are the thousands of Manasseh.”

So Moses' final hour is approaching. He has been on top of Mount Nebo, and he has seen the promised land; so now as his final farewell he wants to bless the children of Israel. He said, "The Lord came from Sinai, and rose up from Seir unto them; He shined forth from mount Paran, and He came with ten thousands of saints; from His right hand went a fiery law for them; Yea He loved the people; all His saints are in thy hand; and they sat down at His feet; every one shall receive thy words. Moses commanded us a law, even the inheritance of the congregation of Jacob. And he was king in Jeshurun when the heads of the people and the tribes of Israel were gathered together. Let Reuben live and not die, and let not his men be few. And this is the blessing of Judah, and he said, hear, Lord, the voice of Judah, and bring him unto his people; let his hands be sufficient for him, and be thou a help to him form his enemies. And of Levi he said, Let thy Thummim and thy Urim, be with thy holy one, whom thou didst prove at Massah, and with whom thou didst strive at the waters of Meribah, who said unto his father and to his mother, I have not seen him, neither did he acknowledge his brethren, nor knew his own children; for they have observed thy word and kept thy covenant. They shall teach Jacob thy judgments, and Israel thy law; they shall put incense before thee, and whole burnt sacrifice upon thy altar."Moses bless the people

And Moses came and spoke the words of the song into the ears of the people, he and Hoshea the son of Nun. And Moses made an end to speaking all these words to all Israel. And he said unto them. "Set your hearts unto all the words which I testify among you this day, which you shall command your children to observe to do; all the words of this law. For it is not a vain thing for you; because it is your life; and through this thing you shall prolong your days in the land whither you go over Jordan to possess it." And the Lord spoke unto Moses that selfsame day saying, "Get thee up into this mountain Abarim unto mount Nebo which is in the land of Moab that is over against Jericho and behold the land of Canaan which I give unto the children of Israel for a possession, and die in the mount wither thou goest up, and be gathered unto thy people as Aaron thy brother was gathered unto his people. Because you trespassed against me among the children of Israel at the waters of Meribah-Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin. because ye sanctified me not in the midst of the children of Israel. Yet you shall see the land before thee; but thou shall not go thither unto the land which I gave unto the children of Israel."

Moses Continues his song
To me belongs vengeance and recompense; their feet shall slide in due time, For the day of thir calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste. For the Lord shall judge His people and repent Himself for his servants when He sees that their power is gone, and there is none shut up or left. And he shall say, where are their gods in whom they trusted which did eat the fat of their acrifices and drink the wine of their drink offerings? Let them rise up and help you and be your protection.  See now that I even I, am he and there is no god like me.  I kill and I make alive. Iwound and I heal, neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand for I lift up my hand to heaven and say I live forever  If I whet my glittering sword and my hand take hold on jiudgment, I will render vngeance to my enemies; and reward them who hate me. I will make my arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh, and that with the blood of the slain and the captives from the long-haired heads of the enemy.

Mercy And Judgment

I said I would scatter them into corners; I would make the remembrance of them to cease from among men, were it not for the fear of the enemy, less their adversaries would behave themselves strangely; less they would say, “Our hand is high and the Lord has not done all this.  For they are a nation void of counsel, neither is there any understanding in them.”  Oh, that they were wise, that they understood this, that they may consider their latter end!  How should one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, except their Rock had sold them, and the Lord had shut them up?  For their rock is not our Rock even our enemies themselves being judges. For their vine is of the vine of Sodom, and of the fields of Gomorrah; their grapes are grapes of gall, their clusters are bitter. Their vine is of the vine of serpents, and the cruel venom of asps.  Is not this laid up in stores with me, and sealed up among my treasures?www.chaberbooks.com

THE DANGER OF APOSTASY AND JUDGEMENT
But when Jeshurun grew fat and kicked. and you have become fat and kick. you are covered with fatness, and you forsake Lord who made you, and you lightly regard the rock of yor salvation. You provoke him to jealousy, with strange and abominable gods and caused him to be angry; you sacrifice unto demons not to God. You sacrifice to gods whom you do not know, and whom your fathers did not know, and you are unmindful of the God who begat you. And so the lord abhor you because of the behavior of you his sons and his daughters; so the Lord hid his face from you for you are a very perverse generation, children in whom there is no faith. You have moved me to jealousy with those who are not God; you have provoked me to anger with your vanities. Therefore I will move you to jealousy with those who are not a people. I will provoke you to anger with a foolish nation. You shall be burnt with hunger and devoured with burning heat and bitter destruction.  I will also send upon you the teeth of beasts with the poison of serpents out of the dust.

Moses' Song of the Lord's protection
O foolish people and unwise, Is not He your father, that has bought you? Has He not made and established you? Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations; ask your father and he will show you; your elders and they will tell you. When the Most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when He separated the sons of Adam, He set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel. For the Lord's portion is the lot of His inheritance. He found him in a desert land and in the waste howling wilderness, He led him about, He instructed him, He kept him as the apple of His eye. As an eagle stirs up her nest, flutters over her young, spreads abroad her wings, bears them, takes them on her wings, so the Lord alone did lead him, and there was no strange God with him. He made him ride on the high places of the earth, that he might eat the increase of the field and He made him to suck honey out of the rock and oil out of the flinty rock, butter of kine and milk of sheep with fat of lambs and rams of the breed of Bashan and goats with the fat of kidneys, and of wheat; and you did drink of the pure blood of the grapes.
